Candlemakers have to date not been able to produce any good imitation of beeswax candles using cheaper mineral waxes. Pure beeswax candles with their delightful sweet natural fragrance burn longer, more cleanly, and give off more light than other wax candles. Though beeswax physically resembles other waxes in conspicuous ways, it is in fact entirely different in its chemistry and molecular characteristics. It's melting point is high, between 143 and 145 degrees Fahrenheit and has the highest melting point of any wax known. This partly accounts for its great value as a candle wax. Beeswax candles burn very slowly. They are probably worth their extra cost in terms of this alone. Beeswax is very stable, subject to deterioration by very few solvents. Beeswax was found in the ancient tombs of Egyptian kings where, remarkably, it still retains its pliability even after thousands of years.

Beeswax has been brought up from shipwrecks after decades under the sea, still in good condition. The ancients thought beeswax was gathered by the bees from plants, and Aristotle recorded this as fact. He doubtless mistook pollen for beeswax, or perhaps he confused it with
propolis, a resinous pitch which the bees do in fact gather from plants.
